Plan for Domestic and International Travel

Domestic Travel

If the H-1B employee (and/or their H-4 dependents) will travel within the US, they should carry with them their passport and a copy of their I-94 Arrival Departure Record. If they have a paper I-94 card, it may be at the bottom of their I-797 approval notice (if they changed/extended status in the US), or it may be stapled in their passport from their last entry to the US. If, however, their last entry to the US was made under the electronic I-94 process, they can download their electronic I-94 record from https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home.

International Travel

If the H-1B employee (and/or their H-4 dependents) will travel outside of the US, they must be certain they have a valid H-1B (or H-4 dependent) visa stamp from a US consulate or embassy before attempting to re-enter the US. In addition to a valid passport and H-1B visa stamp, we advise that H-1B employees carry a copy of the H-1B approval notice, recent pay stubs, and a copy of the most recent H-1B application as filed with USCIS.

For instructions on obtaining a new visa stamp, see our Apply for an H-1B Visa Stamp page.
