Home under the Dome: Notre Dame's Engagement with the International Student Community on Campus and Beyond

Notre Dame International invites all members of the Notre Dame community and friends of the University to the fifth event in a series of virtual events dedicated to internationalizing conversations on issues of vital importance.
This roundtable will focus on Notre Dame’s current engagement with the international student community, at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Our graduate and undergraduate representatives will speak about their experiences at Notre Dame and their engagement with the community. The discussion will highlight Notre Dame’s commitment to internationalization as well as inform the community where we go from here.

Panelists
Mattia Boccuti is a third-year PhD candidate in Italian Literature. He graduated in Modern Italian Literature from the University of Salerno, Italy (BA) and in Modern Italian Philology from the University of Bologna, Italy (MA). His dissertation project focuses on Marian devotion in the Middle Ages and Dante’s representation of his beloved woman, Beatrice. He has published articles on Dante’s Divine Comedy, Petrarch’s Penitential Psalms, and book reviews in the field of Medieval literature. He is currently teaching Italian language to undergraduate students. He is also serving in the CPG committee of the GSU at the University of Notre Dame.
Jay Caponigro works with the associate vice president in the development, execution and measurement of the institution’s efforts to strengthen its relationship with the local community. In his portfolio, Caponigro oversees the Robinson Community Learning Center (RCLC) and the university’s Teachers As Scholars program, and collaborates with colleagues to support various university partnerships with area schools, non-profits, and government partners. He also serves on the Steering Committee of the university’s Community Engagement Coordinating Council.
Martina Fausto is a junior pursuing a Psychology major with minors in Chinese, Computing & Digital Technologies, and Digital Marketing. Fausto was born in the Philippines and grew up in Singapore, where she attended a K-12 International school. On-campus, she is involved in a variety of activities and groups: she serves as an International Ambassador for ISSA; she is on the International Student Admissions Board, which aids the ND Admissions Office; and she is also a member of the Student International Business Council and several cultural clubs on campus, such as the Filipino-American Student Organization. After graduation, she plans to stay and work in the US first and then return to Asia in the long-run.
Lisa Oglesbee teaches in both the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program and the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program in the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures. She has taught English as a Second Language in multiple contexts, both stateside and overseas in China, Spain, and Lithuania. Her research interests include the integration of Second Language Acquisition theories and practice, as well as the effects of perception training on production intelligibility and accentedness.
Leah Zimmer leads a team committed to ensuring continuous compliance with visa and immigration laws governing student and scholar participation, particularly through efficient, personable immigration advising, as well as cultivating partnerships that support the holistic engagement of the international community and the promotion of the global student body and its opportunities at Notre Dame.
Moderator
Michael Pippenger is a member of the President’s Leadership Council and an officer of the University and leads Notre Dame International, the centralized office for the university’s global strategy. With a team of 100 people around the world, he oversees international students, scholars, and study abroad, supports global faculty research, and runs Notre Dame’s five Global Gateways in Beijing, Dublin, London, Jerusalem and Rome; and six Global Centers in Hong Kong, Mexico City, Mumbai, Santiago de Chile, São Paulo, and Kylemore Abbey in western Ireland. A member of the Provost’s Cabinet, Pippenger chairs the University Committee on Internationalization and serves on the board of the University of Notre Dame (USA) in England.
