It is important to remember that F-1 students, J-1 Exchange Visitors, and their dependents have tax compliance requirements. Notre Dame offers two resources to assist students and Exchange Visitors in maintaining compliance with the IRS.
All non-residents in F and J status have an obligation to file the appropriate forms with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by April 15, 2020.
If you were present in the U.S. in 2019 and:
- you received income, you will need to file a tax return
- you did not receive income, you will need to file a Form 8843
While you are responsible for filing the appropriate forms and maintaining tax compliance, Notre Dame offers two resources to assist you in spring 2020. Both the on-campus Tax Assistance Program and online Sprintax program will guide you through the tax preparation process and assist in arranging the necessary documents to file your tax documents. Should you choose to utilize one of these resources, you may choose to use one but you cannot use both.
Tax Assistance Program
The Notre Dame/Saint Mary’s College Tax Assistance Program (TAP) offers free tax preparation for all international students, scholars, and individuals who were employed by Notre Dame or Saint Mary’s.
The in-person Tax Assistance Program has been suspended. For tax assistance, please refer to the Sprintax information below.
ISSA has arranged access to Sprintax Tax Preparation, an online filing system, for FREE federal tax filing with a discount code for state filing. Sprintax offers step by step instructions through their online portal and a 24/7 live chat help line. Email ISSA at firstname.lastname@example.org for your unique access code should you choose to use this resource. There are a limited number of access codes available.
Again, if you elect to use one of these resources, you will need to choose either the on-campus Tax Assistance Program or the online Sprintax program but you may not choose both.
