Taxes

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is interested in knowing about the tax obligations of virtually all persons, citizens and non-citizens, living in the United States. Further, as a student or scholar in F-1 or J-1 status, you are required to file a tax return, regardless of whether you have any income, in order to maintain your immigration status. This desire to know about you has prompted the requirement that you annually file some kind of report with the IRS. These reports are called “returns” and can differ widely in size, complexity, and content. For that reason Notre Dame’s Department of Accountancy has developed the Tax Assistance Program (TAP). ISSA assists with a special TAP for international students.

While the TAP focuses on taxes, it also includes the information returns for those who will pay no taxes, either because they had no income, or they had income that will be refunded to them all or in part.

The IRS requirements can be complicated and usually the non-citizen will benefit from the help that TAP provides. We encourage you to take advantage of this free service.
