Dear Notre Dame International Students,

The University of Notre Dame is pleased to have a part in what will probably be one of the most important educational experiences of your life. While you are here, you will learn not only from your academic work but also from your contacts with American people and institutions. We hope you take maximum advantage of the opportunity you have here to learn about a new society and culture, and to teach others about your society and culture.

In 1969, Rev. Daniel O’Neil, C.S.C., established what is now the International Student Services and Activities (ISSA) Office. ISSA, which now comprises two offices, Programs and Immigration Services, is responsible for providing support services and programs to international students and their families. Services include pre-arrival correspondence, orientation, newsletters, general and immigration advising, counseling, resource and referral, cultural programs, and community outreach programs.

The ISSA staff strives to internationalize the University of Notre Dame. Many other University offices join us in this mission. Among others, the offices of International Study Programs, Multicultural Student Programs and Services, Admissions, and the Center for Social Concerns all have an international or cultural focus. As international students and scholars, you represent a valuable educational resource in accomplishing this mission simply by your presence on our campus. These offices will be seeking to initiate activities to involve you during your stay, so that the entire community benefits from your presence. We sincerely hope you will join us in these mutually beneficial intercultural activities, as your time permits.

A very warm and sincere welcome to South Bend and the University of Notre Dame!

Sincerely yours,

International Student Services & Activities Staff
