Campus Arrival

International Graduate Students

Your Academic Department
Check in with your academic department for guidance and a schedule of your department’s welcome, orientation, and exam schedules. If you have been granted a stipend by your department or have secured other on-campus employment, please request from your department an Employment Letter (which is required in order to apply for a Social Security number) and bring this letter with you when you register your immigration documents with the Immigration Services office.

Immigration Services Office
121 Main Building

All international student visa holders MUST visit this office with your passport, I -20 or DS-2019, and I-94 Arrival/Departure Record within 1 week after your arrival at Notre Dame. Please bring your Employment Letter with you (if employed on campus) as well. Please see the Immigration Services Web site for the special registration times set aside for you to register your documents.

The Immigration Services office will make a copy of your immigration documents and will verify the arrival of all ND-sponsored F-1 and J-1 students in the Student Exchange Visitor Information (SEVIS) System, which is a federal requirement. It is vital that you maintain regular contact with the office regarding your local address, travel plans, employment considerations, etc. In addition to verifying your arrival, the ISO will clear all student visa holders you for enrollment by 1pm the business day following your SEVIS registration.

All international students must attend an Immigration Rules and Responsibilities Session in addition to registering your documents. This session will be included in the International Student Orientation, Thursday, August 23, 2007.

If you have not done so earlier, complete the History and Physical Form and turn it in to the University Health Service. You must also present proof of having the required immunizations.
Health insurance is mandatory, with some exceptions, for all graduate and international students at the University of Notre Dame (Permanent Visa holders are not required to carry health insurance). If you are already insured through a private insurance plan or intend to opt for coverage under a policy other than the University’s group plan, you must present proof of comparable coverage to the University Health Services insurance liaison, Charlotte Bostic, soon after your arrival on campus, otherwise the premium for the University’s group policy will automatically be billed to your student account. See this site for further information.

J-1 Students: The University’s group policy meets the minimum standards for a health insurance policy required to maintain your immigration status.
All international students are required to undergo a tuberculosis screening process. You may fulfill this obligation during the International Student Orientation sessions on August 23, 2007. Your enrollment and registration may be delayed if you do not complete the tuberculosis screening process.
